Dear All,
As a local I believe that it is usually difficult to relocate and build up a new life in a new country, but maybe it’s even harder living in Hungary when you don’t speak Hungarian. It’s one of the most difficult languages with its 14 vowels, 30 consonants, even digraphs like TY, CS or NY. It also uses many prefixes, suffixes to modify any kind of word you can think of.
Our educational project is called MIDschool Hungary. This is based on helping foreign families, mainly kids in the Hungarian school system. We started operating in 2021 at the Óbudai Nagy László Primary School, at No. 90 Zápor Street, Budapest. Since there are a lot of foreign children coming to us, there was a pressing need to organize Hungarian as a foreign language classes.
Currently, children participate in morning and afternoon individual lessons, afternoon group lessons, and their parents can study with us in the afternoon. In addition, we have created a WhatsApp group for parents called ‘Helping Hand’, where we help parents when they get stuck in either school or office matters. We also hold parents’ meetings for those who do not speak the Hungarian language.
Beside this we will start a new unique program from July 2023. The foreign kids have the chance to spend one year just learning the language, get to know the country, its culture, and gaining a foothold in their new lives ‘between the two worlds’ thus creating a calm, warm, and protective background for them. The system is very simple: The kids will be registered in our school, but they have classes in MIDschool Hungary from Monday to Thursday. On Friday they spend a day with their classmates in their official school.
After a year they will have enough language competence and confidence to be able to follow the classes in Hungarian.
At our school, language teaching is not only about holding language classes, but also for our students we offer free language training via our various spare time programmes.
We connect our students in Hungarian with our students in other foreign languages, thus creating a successful win-win relationship among them.
